Oklahoma Sports Leadership Academy

Oklahoma Sports Leadership Academy

Sports are a major part of our lives and culture in the United States, and some of our country’s most influential leaders have been shaped by their participation in athletics at various levels.  The vast majority of those being impacted this way are not professional athletes.  Although the majority of young people will not compete in athletics beyond high school, they will have opportunities to step up and be dynamic leaders in other fields at some point in their lives.  Today’s student-athletes will be the teachers, business people, lawyers, and doctors who positively impact our communities in many ways.

With this reality in mind, the Academy of Leadership & Liberty is very excited to begin a new program called Oklahoma Sports Leadership Academy (OSLA).  OSLA focuses on high school athletes, helps develop critical leadership ability, and inspires them to use these tools to impact their teams and communities.  June 14-17, 2011, the region’s best student-athletes will gather on the campus of Oklahoma Christian University (OC) to learn these important lessons.  Through this experience, students will learn how to identify the positive qualities taught by athletics and how to use those qualities in a practical way to serve those around them.  Students will learn from qualified, proven leaders who have devoted their lives to impacting society through the respective careers. Each student-athlete in attendance will be challenged to return to their schools and teams a different person who is seeking to make a difference in their own life, as well as the lives of their teammates. Through skills strengthened and techniques learned, these students will emerge better prepared to take on life’s challenges and better equipped to be dynamic leaders.

Hosted by OC’s Academy of Leadership and Liberty, this program will provide student-athletes with access to some of the most inspirational and well-equipped leaders in athletics and business today. In addition to listening and learning from these great speakers, students will also be given the opportunity to interact with them and test these newly acquired skills first-hand.

Through the Oklahoma Sports Leadership Academy, we seek to develop young leaders who have a core understanding and sufficient training in the four pillars of leadership: character, communication, conflict management, and teamwork.  OSLA is a valuable tool that will positively impact the students who attend and participate, and that they will leave better prepared to be leaders who are empowered to influence others.
